I’ve built floating shelves that look like they’re defying gravity, and I’m going to show you exactly how to pull it off using five clever methods that hide all the hardware completely.
For lightweight shelves, I route keyholes with a Whiteside 3050 bit and chisel recesses so screws nest flush.
When I need heavy-duty support, I rip a 1″–2″ strip at 45 degrees for a French cleat that locks shelves tight to the wall.
Thick 2×8 shelves slide onto hidden metal brackets I anchor with 3″ screws every 16 inches.
For big spans, I build hollow boxes from 3/4″ plywood with internal 2×4 framing that screws straight through the back.
And when I’m feeling ambitious, I run all-thread straight into studs for massive invisible strength.
Each trick gives you that clean, bracket-free look you’re after, with step-by-step details for each method.
Choose the Right Bracket-Free Method for Your Shelf Size

Five different ways to hang shelves without ugly brackets staring back at you.
For lightweight, flat shelves, keyhole routing or concealed floating hardware with a back cavity work best. These methods keep things simple and clean. For thicker shelves that need real support, hidden bracket systems with back recesses or a French cleat are more effective. The French cleat distributes weight across two points, providing structural stability.
For massive installations like a 24-inch deep storage shelf, all-thread suspensions anchored into studs offer maximum strength and are completely invisible. Pick what fits your shelf requirements.

Route Keyholes for Lightweight, Flat Wall Shelves

Once you’ve picked your method, keyhole routing is an excellent option for small shelves. This method provides a bracket-free mount with no visible hardware.
Keyhole routing offers a bracket-free mount with no visible hardware, making it ideal for small shelves.
Here’s exactly how to do it:
- Mark your studs and plan where those keyholes go on the back of shelf so the wide part hits solid wood.
- Grab your keyhole router bit (the Whiteside 3050 is a reliable choice) and cut slots about 1 inch long on your lightweight shelves.
- Chisel tiny recesses around each slot so screw heads nest clean. This keeps flush mounting perfect and your shelf tight to the wall.
- Drive wall screws into studs, then hook those keyholes on and slide down until your shelf locks tight.
This method works well on 12×6 inch shelves around 3/4 inch thick. The result is a rigid installation with no visible hardware.

Mount a French Cleat for Adjustable, Heavy-Duty Shelving

Grab your circular saw for the French cleat method, a reliable approach for heavy loads. Rip a 1″–2″ strip at 45 degrees for your wall cleat and screw it into studs with 2″–3″ screws. Then attach the matching shelf cleat to your wall shelves. When they hook together flush, the connection provides strength without brackets. Use a level to keep everything straight. These adjustable shelves slide right on. For really heavy-duty applications, space multiple cleats along the length and hit every stud you can. The result is a clean, floating look that appears simple to achieve.

Slide Thick Shelves Onto Hidden Metal Brackets

Why settle for clunky brackets when you can make your shelves look like they’re floating on air? Hidden brackets totally transform how we build wall shelves.
Here’s how to do it:
- Mount hidden brackets to studs using 3-inch screws, spacing them 16 inches apart for solid support
- Cut thick shelves from 2×8 lumber (at least 1.5 inches thick) so the hidden hardware disappears completely
- Drill a back recess with a depth-limiting bit, then create another back recess so everything flush mounts perfectly against the wall
- Slide the shelf on, tap it gently, and add underside screws for extra security
No visible brackets, just gorgeous thick shelves that look seamless. Your friends will ask how you did it.

Build Hollow Box Shelves for Large Spans and Storage

Hidden brackets work great for single boards, but sometimes you need something bigger. That’s where hollow box shelves come in. I build these when I want serious storage without ugly brackets showing.
My go-to method starts with 3/4 inch plywood for the top and bottom, then I cut rabbets at the front edges. Internal brackets made from 2x4s or lauan pieces create a sturdy frame inside. I screw through the back of the shelf so everything’s anchored to studs securely.
I pre-assemble the box, glue and screw the frame, then mount the whole thing. Finally, I add edge banding for that clean front edge finish. Paint or stain, and the result is floating shelves that can handle substantial weight.
